My Friends Care, Inc. was formally incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization in 1989. We were started by a woman in Rochester Hills, Michigan, who had a son in need of a transplant and another family with a loved one who needed
a transplant. Since then, we've helped hundreds of families throughout
Michigan and have really grown in the past few years due to the changing nature of bone marrow transplants as a treatment for many types of cancers and other blood disorders.
We receive referrals for
individuals who need a bone marrow transplant but are unable to afford the cost of the procedure or the long-term care associated with having a transplant.
Many
clients travel to a transplant center in another state and need money for travel and living expenses during their stay.
MFC used to be known as My Friends Care Leukemia Fund, but changed our name in 1992 because we started to get so many clients with diseases other than leukemia.
Basically, we work with families to help them raise the money they need to cover their expenses. We also have a large referral network of families who have been in similar
situations and they are an excellent source of information.
Families are referred to us through physicians, hospitals, friends, and other
sources. We first meet with them to assess their needs. We then help them organize a fundraising
committee and get them started doing fundraising in their community. We also put them in touch with other families who have done similar things in their
area and give them assistance with advertising, organizing, getting licenses for raffles, etc.
Since 1989, we have also been active in the recruitment and testing of potential bone marrow donors, adding thousands of names to the National Bone Marrow Registry. Each year the demand for our assistance grows.
My Friends Care is staffed by one full time person, the
Executive Director. We have a part-time financial manager and office volunteers. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
