Patient and Family Support

The staff and volunteers of My Friends Care are dedicated to helping people in need of a bone marrow transplant. My Friends Care is a federally approved 501(c)3 organization that is licensed by the State of Michigan Attorney General's Office. Because of this, we are governed by a strict set of laws and regulations that in large part determine what types of assistance we can provide. Although it is our goal to provide as much help as possible, we recognize that we cannot provide assistance in every situation.

The following guidelines should be helpful in allowing you to determine whether My Friends Care is able to provide you with the assistance you need.

My Friends Care can...

  • Help you set up a fundraising committee (also called a "support group").
  • Help you assess what your financial needs are and how to best approach your fundraising goals.
  • Provide you with fundraising ideas, resources and suggestions based on past experience with other groups in similar situations.
  • Put you in touch with other Michigan families who have conducted similar fundraising activities.
  • Assist you with advertising your events and publicizing them to the local media.
  • Accept MasterCard and VISA for special event ticket sales, auctions, and donations.
  • Assist with bulk mailings with our bulk mail permit at the Mount Clemens Post Office.
  • Provide you with fundraising materials such as flyers, canisters, banners, receipts for donations, etc.
  • Talk with potential donors at your request to encourage their participation on your behalf.
  • Work with your transplant hospital staff to make your stay there as comfortable as possible.
  • Pay medical bills directly from the funds you raise when proper receipts are presented.
  • Reimburse you for other medical expenses from the funds you raise when proper receipts are presented.
  • Assist you with travel and living arrangements.
  • Pay travel and living expenses (at the transplant center) for you and your support person during your hospitalization from the funds you have raised through My Friends Care.
  • Work with families who wish to host a bone marrow donor drive to help insure a successful event.

My Friends Care cannot...

  • Assist you with fundraising or accept donations on your behalf unless we have received the proper documentation, including:
  • Be responsible for decisions made by your insurer or physician regarding your treatment.
  • Provide you with volunteers from outside your support group to plan and host each fund raiser.
  • Allow for funds to be deposited in an account outside of My Friends Care.
  • Pay for any expenses not directly related to your treatment.
  • Reimburse you for any lost wages as a result of your treatment.
  • Guarantee that your fundraising efforts will be able to raise all of the funds that you need in a timely manner!
